Sizing Reports - Children

In 2008, Select Research managed the ShapeGB Childrenswear Sizing Project, sponsored by six major UK retailers. This project produced the largest collection of data using 3D scanning on children ever assembled. For background on ShapeGB see:

With the six retailers and Alvanon, the world's largest manufacturer of trade mannequins for retail clothing, Select then produced three reports for wider use, offering guidelines on key measurements on children's sizing for apparel and clothing design. This data superseded the 1990 British Standard BS 7231-2:1990  and, we believe still comprises the largest and most up to date on children's sizing available on children anywhere in the world. The three reports are summarised in three separate reports, now available:-

Babies & Toddlers aged 0-4 years - Unisex

4- 16 Girls

4 - 16 Boys

In 2018, at the launch of the ShapeGB adult survey, Tesco (click here to read) confirmed how the childrenswear data from ShapeGB had helped to reduce their returns on children's clothing.

These Report's are designed to be an overview of what the Shape GB data found,
as it relates to key body measurements of children today. This can
provide clothing brands, retailers and manufacturers with updated, practical
information that will enable them to create better fitting children’s clothes, more
consistently.

Each of the charts included within this Report tracks the distribution of chest,
waist, hip and sleeve length measurements found in the children who were
scanned on Shape GB, by age. The charts also include the average
measurement found at each age as well as the actual number of children
scanned.
